It started back in 2013, A very crucial sad and heart opening time in my life. I'd recently lost my beloved mother suddenly and I was going through this emotional rollercoaster. Grief hits individuals differently, so I found what worked for me. You see I love to travel and always collected souvenirs from places as memories. I remember traveling to Europe and I picked up items for my parents. During the process of cleaning out my mothers closet I discovered she never wore anything I purchased for her. I also want to mention my Mother was a fashionista and all her garments were timeless. In fact I used to borrow from her wardrobe ( She was and still is my Style Muse.) It dawned on me how she had so much clothes and just stuff barely used. That is when the light bulb in my head turned on!!

The word detachment is what I heard so I begin to throw things out my basically all of my bed room furniture I went through my closet and made a pile for clothes to get donated to my local Salvation Army. (https://satruck.org/) I literally went on this purge fest it was emotional and liberating at the same time. I know your wondering okay if you threw out your bed where did you sleep? The couch became my place of rest. Yep, I started to sleep on the couch. And that is where I decided to revamp how I wanted to live. This was the moment I realize material things are all an illusion.

So here are my Top 6 things that helped me transition into living more practical minimalist lifestyle.

  1. Self Inventory - I like to call it my life purpose in categories list ( career, finances , love life, family, health/wellbeing, faith) I needed to narrow down what is the most important thing to me that will keep me focus.

  2. Environment- How do I want my environment to make me feel. I wanted to my space to be clutter free. I realized did I need 2 dresser draws? Did I need to have a bunch of perfumes, hair products sitting around? the answer was no.

  3. Shopping - I am former shopaholic - hoarder, I would buy things i didn't need but a "just in case garments." I started to become realistic about my wants and needs. Girl, you know dog on well your not wearing that no time soon. I started to talk myself out of buying "stuff."

  4. Mail Hoarder- You know you come from the mailbox, you open the mail and then throw it on the table. All of sudden that mail pile is higher than Mount Everest. If the mail was important I would hold on to it for at least 1 month. Thereon after I would shred it I would also add GO PAPER LESS again GO PAPERLESS! SAVE THE TREES :)

  5. Shoe lover - I started to looking at my shoe game differently. I am huge on quality over quantity and knowing that why do I have multiples of same style shoe or sneakers? I would buy new pair of shoes every week! Why??? So what I started to do was pay attention to the shoes or sneaks I wore within a week. I went from owning over 100 pair to 9 pair of sneakers and shoes. ( That is still a'lot to me but whose counting)

  6. Money Matters - live under not over your budget, just because your account says you can afford it that doesn't mean buy it. Yes, I get it your enticed by that sale buy one get 5 for 50% off. Don't fall for it self control and obedience plays a big roll. I would ask myself why are you buying things you will eventually sell or give away.
