My Man vs. My Dad

Writer's picture: Sylvia M.Sylvia M.

I just want openly discuss how real the struggle is when you lose your dad or if your dad is not in your life the effects it truly has on girls. The choices in men the level of standard and requirements is real. The cons of being a Daddies girl is that your indirectly comparing the traits of your Dad to your life partner. I always felt like no man would ever measure up, I will be the first to admit too I am the picky type. I was raised in home where my parents took care of each other. By doing so sharing the responsibilities of raising four children and balancing respective career paths and marriage. I also took the time to get to learn my Dads love language and his was affirmation, acts of service, gifts. What I appreciated was his openness, unsolicited advice, protection, love. My Dad never sugar coated the happenings of life. I saw the way he treated my mother, I mean a man who was serious about his vows.

As a young girl and even as an adult I took mental note of everything. I was always the type of woman whereby if you met my Dad consider yourself fortunate.

But the question I always ask myself am I hindering myself of true love by comparing every man I meet to my Dad? Am I indirectly trying to create a replica of my Dad in my future husband? Sadly, The truth is I have which has caused me to remain single. Self assessment is crucial and because I am in a space of righting my wrongs, the thought of entering a new relationship is scary. But I am open to it and deciding to tear down that huge checklist and not expecting anything. By doing this I am welcoming the unique type of love and unique type of relationship into my life. No man could compare to father and daughter relationship, It's in a league of its own. For me it's a choice of surrendering to who the person is without formulating opinions comparing to the character of my earthly Dad but focus on his character trait orchestrated by God.

Let See.

In memory of my Dad ROB!!!
